The Navy man smoking a pipe in the left photo is my father, Fred Schuler. He was probably enroute from 'boot camp' in Newport, RI to his first duty station, the cruiser U.S.S. Richmond, in San Diego, CA, when this photo was made in June, 1939. He wrote on the back of the photo: " Caliente, Nevada - in front of station. Swell place."
Dad rarely said things like "swell place." He must have really liked Caliente. His note led me to visit Caliente in July, 2007 (right photo). I found nice people (population 1,341), the wonderful, restored railroad staion, beautiful mountains and clean, crisp air. Caliente is a swell place. |
